Solange Knowles Opens Up About Battling POTS

Solange Knowles shares her battle with POTS, opening up about the challenges of living with immune conditions and her support network.

Solange Knowles, the 38-year-old singer and younger sister of Beyoncé, recently shared her journey with multiple immune conditions, particularly postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This revelation came in response to her musician friend, Shaun Ross, who spoke about his own experience with POTS after recovering from COVID-19.

Solange’s Journey with POTS

In an emotional Instagram comment, Solange expressed empathy and solidarity with Ross and others battling POTS, a condition that affects blood flow and can lead to symptoms like dizziness, fainting, and an elevated heart rate. She wrote, “Sending u so much love and strength Shaun and to all in the comments struggling with the debilitating, confusing, and lonely symptoms of POTS!” Her words reflected a deep understanding of the physical and mental toll such a condition can impose.

Solange didn’t just offer words of support. She also commended ‘Dysautonomia International,’ a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and advancing research for dysautonomia, which encompasses POTS. Solange noted, “The good folks at @dysautonomiaintl were really an incredible resource for me, and I feel really grateful for the spoonie community for holding me down during my times of complete uncertainty!”

The term “spoonie” is commonly used to describe people living with chronic illness, referencing the “spoon theory”—a metaphor that explains the limited energy resources people with chronic illness often experience.

Shaun Ross Responds

In response to Solange’s heartfelt comment, Ross replied, “Thank you so much, Solange. You’ve known me since I was a teen and how energetic I can be.” This exchange highlighted their long-standing friendship and shared resilience in facing health challenges.

A Long-Standing Health Battle

For Solange, dealing with health issues is not new. In 2017, she disclosed managing an unnamed immune condition that led her to cancel her highly anticipated New Year’s Eve performance at the Afropunk Festival in South Africa. While she did not disclose the exact nature of her condition at the time, her recent remarks shed more light on the struggles she has faced over the years.

Acknowledging the Support Network

Solange’s comments not only revealed her personal challenges with POTS but also emphasized the importance of a strong support network and accessible resources. She expressed gratitude towards the organizations and communities that have helped her navigate an often confusing and isolating condition.
