Activist and social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), on Monday led a group of primary school children to the gate of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration in Area 11, where he conducted lessons as a form of protest.
The action was aimed at drawing attention to the prolonged strike by primary school teachers in the FCT, who have been off duty since March.
According to Abuja Metro, the strike began over the non-payment of the approved ₦70,000 minimum wage and outstanding arrears allegedly owed by the chairmen of the six area councils within the FCT.
Two days before the protest, VDM had posted a video on his Facebook page, urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the matter. In the post, he said:
“For over nine weeks, our public primary school kids in the Federal Capital Territory have been out of school. According to their books, they claimed they are paying these primary school teachers ₦80,000 and above, depending on their level. Sadly, they lied to them because till now, they are still being paid ₦30,000 and upon this, they have been owed salaries and for these reasons, the teachers decided to go on strike.”
Monday’s demonstration involved a symbolic classroom setup at the FCTA gate, with VDM teaching some of the pupils in the open. The event attracted public attention and renewed focus on the ongoing dispute between the teachers and local council authorities.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the FCT Administration or the area council chairmen regarding the protest.
