US and UK Jets Strike Yemen as Tensions with Houthis Escalate

On Wednesday, US and British warplanes launched a series of airstrikes in Yemen targeting the capital, Sanaa, and the northern Amran province.

According to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV, five of the strikes hit the Harf Sufyan district in Amran, while two more struck the Jarban area in the Sanhan district of Sanaa. The Houthis did not disclose details about casualties or damage from the attacks.

The strikes were part of a broader campaign by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which confirmed targeting two underground facilities used by Iranian-backed Houthi forces to store advanced conventional weapons (ACW).

CENTCOM claimed the Houthis had utilized these sites for recent attacks on US Navy warships and merchant vessels in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

This latest escalation follows a Monday announcement by the Houthis, who claimed responsibility for attacking the US aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman in the northern Red Sea.

They also alleged missile and drone strikes on targets in southern and central Israel. The group has consistently attacked Israeli-linked cargo ships in the Red Sea, citing solidarity with Gaza, where Israel’s ongoing military campaign has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths since October 2023.

The US-led coalition has ramped up airstrikes in Yemen throughout 2024, ostensibly in retaliation for Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping routes. These airstrikes are often met with counterattacks from the Houthis, further inflaming an already volatile conflict.

As Yemen remains a battleground for proxy wars and regional power struggles, the human cost continues to rise, leaving questions about the long-term consequences of such military actions unanswered.
