Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has stressed the importance of artists establishing meaningful connections with their fans. Speaking on a recent episode of the Shopping The Sneakers podcast, the celebrated singer explained that fostering such relationships enables fans to engage with other aspects of an artist’s life beyond their music.
Savage pointed to industry icons Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy as examples, noting that their enduring success is largely due to the strong bonds they’ve built with their fanbases. “It’s not just about the music; it’s your fanbase and your brand,” Savage remarked.
She further emphasized that artists need to focus on being relatable and diversifying their appeal through areas like fashion and personal branding. “A lot of times, artists are just putting out music; they are not really connecting with the fans,” she said, highlighting a common gap in artist-fan relationships.
Savage praised Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy for being able to stay relevant whether they release new songs or not, thanks to their deep fan connections. “They’ve established relationships with their fanbases. Whether they are dropping a song or not, they are in the conversation,” she noted.
Her advice to artists was clear: building a strong fanbase is crucial. “You’re only as good as your team,” Savage concluded, encouraging her peers to think beyond music and invest in cultivating a loyal and engaged following.
