Three Dead After Homemade Christmas Cake in Brazil

In Torres, Brazil, a tragic family gathering turned fatal after three relatives died from suspected arsenic poisoning linked to a homemade Christmas cake.

The cake was prepared by 61-year-old Zeli Terezinha Silva dos Anjos for a celebration on December 23, 2024.

The victims included Zeli’s sisters, Maida Berenice Flores da Silva (58) and Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos (65), as well as her niece, Tatiana Denize Silva dos Anjos (43).

Three other family members, including a 10-year-old boy, were hospitalized but are now in stable condition.

Preliminary blood tests revealed arsenic in the victims, leading police to open an investigation. Authorities are also re-examining the death of Zeli’s husband, Paulo Luiz, who died in September from what was initially believed to be food poisoning. His body will be exhumed to determine if there is a connection to the recent poisonings.

During a search of Zeli’s home, police found expired food and a suspicious white liquid in a medicine bottle. Zeli herself became ill after eating the cake and is cooperating with investigators.

Officials noted that there are no known inheritance disputes or apparent motives for the poisonings, leaving many questions unanswered. The investigation is ongoing.
