South East APC Urges President Tinubu to Review SEDC Appointments

The South East chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally written to President Bola Tinubu, raising concerns about recent appointments to the South East Development Commission (SEDC). The letter, signed by Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, APC National Vice Chairman for the South East, highlighted gratitude for the establishment of the Commission but questioned the fairness and legality of its composition.

In the letter, the South East APC claimed that the appointments made to the SEDC’s board and management deviated from the provisions of the Act that established the Commission. They alleged that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, played a central role in influencing biased appointments.

Specifically, the party accused Kalu of filling five key positions in the Commission with his personal staff, effectively sidelining representatives from Imo and Ebonyi states. This move, the letter contended, undermined equitable distribution of positions among the five South East states, as required by the SEDC Act.

Anonymous lawmakers from the South East echoed these concerns, accusing the Deputy Speaker of disregarding collective party advice and pursuing personal interests. They also criticized the appointment of two individuals from opposition parties to the SEDC, arguing that the APC has numerous qualified technocrats who could have filled the roles.

“This disregard for equitable representation and party loyalty may discourage APC supporters in the South East,” one lawmaker remarked.

The South East APC urged President Tinubu to reconsider the appointments, emphasizing the need to adhere to the Act and ensure fair representation. The party expressed fears that the current imbalance could erode party support in the region and compromise the Commission’s intended developmental goals.
