At least six people lost their lives, and more than 30 others were injured when a fire broke out at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu, southern India.
The blaze erupted late Thursday night in the city of Dindigul. Its cause is still under investigation. Fires like this are tragically common in India due to inadequate firefighting resources and poor adherence to safety regulations.
According to the Press Trust of India, the six victims were found unconscious inside a hospital lift. Police Superintendent A. Pradeep confirmed that the injured, numbering around 30, are in stable condition.
The Times of India reported that the fire began in the reception area on the ground floor before spreading quickly to other parts of the building.
This tragedy follows a series of recent deadly fires in India. Just weeks ago, 10 newborns perished in a hospital fire in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier this year, a fire at a children’s hospital in New Delhi claimed the lives of six infants.
