Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) for the restoration of operations at the Port Harcourt refinery. This move marks a significant milestone in addressing Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products.
The NNPCL announced on Tuesday that the refinery, with a production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, is back in operation. This development has sparked widespread enthusiasm among Nigerians, hopeful for an end to the prolonged dependency on imported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Peter Obi praised the progress but emphasized the need for tangible benefits to reflect in reduced pump prices and economic relief for citizens.
“The refinery, which resumes operations today, has an installed capacity to process 60,000 barrels of crude oil daily. Around 200 trucks are expected to load products each day from the facility. Nigerians now eagerly await the corresponding impact on pump prices and the overall economy,” Obi remarked.
The former Anambra State Governor also expressed optimism about the potential revival of the Kaduna refinery, which he believes could further enhance productivity, improve transportation, and alleviate economic pressures nationwide.
While applauding these advancements, Obi highlighted the necessity of transparent and accountable management of the nation’s oil resources.
“While these achievements are steps in the right direction, it is essential to prioritize transparency in NNPCL’s operations. Nigerians deserve clear information about how the increased refining capacity will be managed, ensuring that its benefits reach everyone and contribute to sustainable development,” he stated.
