Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on President Bola Tinubu to lower the pump price of petrol to N300 per liter during the festive season. George made the appeal during a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, urging the government to implement the measure from mid-December through the end of January to bring relief to Nigerians.
George emphasized the significance of December and January as months of celebration for people across all faiths and traditions.
“There are two months in any calendar year that are very important. Whether you are a Christian, Muslim, atheist, or traditionalist, these months hold universal importance,” George stated.
He urged the government to temporarily reduce fuel costs, suggesting that the government could absorb the losses as a goodwill gesture.
Stating the First Lady’s recent philanthropic gesture, George noted, “If Madam First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, could donate N1 billion to a university, she could also contribute toward offsetting the costs of reducing petrol prices.”
He argued that such a move would spread happiness across Nigeria, easing the financial burden on citizens during a critical period.
“This would send messages of joy across tribes and homes, ensuring Nigerians could sleep well with fuel at N300 per liter,” George added.
Petroleum marketers recently projected that fuel prices could rise to between N900 and N1,000 per liter during the holidays. This was revealed by Billy Gillis-Harry, President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association (PETROAN), and Chinedu Ukadike, spokesperson for the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN).
Calling the initiative a “challenge,” George expressed hope that the government would act to alleviate the economic strain on citizens during the holiday period. “With prayers and goodwill, such an act could bring smiles to millions of faces,” he concluded.
