Edo State has become the epicenter of political disputes as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lock horns over the first-ever flyover project in the state. The flyover, flagged off in November by Governor Monday Okpebholo at Ramat Park, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, has ignited heated debates on procurement transparency and governance priorities.
During a press conference held on November 26, 2024, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, chairman of the Edo State caretaker committee of the PDP, launched a scathing critique of the project. He alleged significant violations of standard procurement procedures in awarding the contract for the flyover.
Describing the initiative as a “white elephant project,” Aziegbemi claimed the flyover was a political payoff for those who supported the APC in the state’s recent gubernatorial election.
“We demand that the government publicly disclose the procurement process, including project cost, contractor selection, and compliance with the state’s Public Procurement Act,” said Aziegbemi. He further accused Governor Okpebholo of undermining governance structures inherited by his administration, framing the project as emblematic of a broader disregard for legal frameworks.
The APC, led by its acting state chairman Jarret Tenebe, swiftly dismissed the PDP’s allegations. Tenebe accused Aziegbemi of misrepresenting facts and failing to grasp the intricacies of governance and budgeting.
“The flyover bridge project was clearly outlined in the revised 2024 appropriation bills,” Tenebe asserted. He argued that the PDP’s criticisms showcased a lack of understanding of the budgetary process, noting that the revised budget allows for projects deemed urgent and necessary.
“Edo people are witnessing a governor committed to turning ‘impossible projects’ like flyovers into reality. Unlike the previous administration’s mere memorandums of understanding (MOUs), this government prioritizes actionable projects that address the people’s needs,” Tenebe said, emphasizing the administration’s developmental approach.
