The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed, has urged corps members in Abia State to avoid unnecessary and hazardous travel, particularly night journeys, to ensure their safety.

This advice was delivered during his official visit to the 2024 Batch C Stream I Corps Members on Sunday, December 8, at the Umunna Bende NYSC Orientation Camp.

Addressing the corps members at the camp’s multipurpose hall, Brigadier General Ahmed emphasized the importance of obtaining appropriate permissions for any travel and using registered transport companies.

Talking about the NYSC’s commitment to their well-being, he reassured them that their security remains a top priority, stating, “NYSC will not post corps members to areas prone to security threats.”

The NYSC chief urged the corps members to take seriously the security lectures and other instructions provided during the orientation program. These, he said, were designed to equip them with the necessary knowledge to stay safe during their service year.

Brigadier General Ahmed also shed light on the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, describing it as a vital initiative aimed at preparing corps members for life beyond the service year.

He revealed that NYSC has partnered with financial institutions to provide interest-free loans and grants to support corps members’ entrepreneurial ambitions. Encouraging self-reflection and improvement, he called on the corps members to maximize their service year for personal and professional growth.

The Director General further encouraged active participation in community development service (CDS), urging corps members to embark on impactful projects in their host communities. Successful initiatives, he noted, could lead to national recognition, including the prestigious Presidential Award, which comes with automatic employment.

“You should remain where you are posted, respect the culture and traditions of your host communities, and work on ventures that will improve both your lives and those of your host communities,” he advised.

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator for Abia, Mrs. Gladys Adama, commended the Abia State Government for initiating rehabilitation work at the orientation camp, a move aimed at improving the living conditions of corps members.
