Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 43-year-old makeup artist, Adekoya Adebukonla Mary, after discovering 2.20 kilograms of cocaine factory-fitted into the walls of her suitcase at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, credible intelligence led to Mary’s arrest on Monday, June 16, as she prepared to board a Qatar Airways flight to India via Doha.
“Under surveillance, Adekoya was allowed to check in her luggage and arrested at the point of boarding her Qatar Airways flight to India via Doha. When her luggage was searched, two large parcels of cocaine weighing 2.20kg were found concealed in the walls of the suitcase she was carrying,” Babafemi said.
In her statement to investigators, Mary claimed she had been recruited and financed by an unidentified drug baron currently at large.
She further alleged that she was traveling under the pretext of undergoing fibroid surgery in India, but admitted that the trip was actually meant to yield financial benefits for her handlers.
The NDLEA has opened a full investigation into the syndicate behind this operation and is working to apprehend the principal suspect. Mary remains in custody as authorities pursue further leads.
