Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old app developer and former University of Pennsylvania graduate, has been arrested in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 50-year-old executive was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on December 4, 2024, in what authorities have described as a targeted attack.
Following the shooting, Mangione fled New York, traveling across Pennsylvania to evade capture. Police apprehended him on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after he was recognized by rookie officers.
At the time of his arrest, Mangione was carrying a passport, over $10,000 in cash, and a backpack containing a 3D-printed pistol and silencer that may have been used in the crime. He was also found with a fake ID. Mangione has been charged with murder and other related offenses.
Investigators are exploring Mangione’s possible motive for the attack. While his recent social media posts suggested frustration with healthcare-related issues, particularly after a major spinal surgery, no clear motive has been confirmed.
Some reports suggest that Mangione may have had personal grievances with corporate America, given his online comments about healthcare denial practices. His background includes ties to several U.S. cities, including San Francisco, and he had reportedly been living in Hawaii before the incident.
