Liberia’s President, Joseph Boakai, has suspended more than 450 government officials for not declaring their assets as required by law.
The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) identified 457 officials, including the minister in charge of the budget and some ambassadors, who failed to submit their asset declarations before the November deadline.
According to a statement from the president’s office, the suspended officials will not receive pay for one month or until they submit the required documents.
Liberia’s laws require public officials to declare their assets when they take office and again when they leave.
The government says this rule is meant to fight corruption and promote accountability.
Boakai, who took office in January 2024, has promised to strengthen governance and the rule of law.
A political analyst, Abdullah Kiatamba, welcomed the move, saying, “I think it’s good news… I hope he continues.”
Liberia ranks 135th out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s corruption index, showing the country still struggles with corruption.
