Lawmakers Demand Military Base in Yelwata After Benue Massacre

The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to establish an Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Yelwata, Benue State, following a deadly attack on the border community.

The resolution came during Wednesday’s plenary session after member Dickson Tarkighir (Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency) presented a motion of urgent national importance.

Tarkighir cited the killing of over 200 residents in Yelwata on June 14 by suspected armed assailants. He described a “devastating and recurrent pattern of violent attacks” in Benue communities, stating the Yelwata massacre worsened an existing humanitarian crisis.

“Over 200 indigenes of Yelwata were brutally killed in a violent attack. Thousands more have been displaced, their homes destroyed, and livelihoods shattered,” Tarkighir stated.

The House resolution specifically calls for the immediate creation of the FOB in Yelwata, located in Guma Local Government Area. The request is now directed to the federal government for action.
