Students of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, have expressed deep concern over what they describe as a worsening state of insecurity in the university environment, citing frequent cases of rape, robbery, and extortion.
In an appeal that has circulated widely on social media platforms in Kwara State, the students said they live in constant fear, especially in off-campus areas where most incidents reportedly occur.
“We are not safe. Robbery and rape cases happen every day within the students’ community in KWASU and we are tired,” one student said.
According to the students, many have suffered assaults, theft, and sexual violence, with little or no visible protection from security agencies. They are urging both the Kwara State Government and the university administration to take urgent steps to address the situation.
In response, the university management has announced new security measures. A statement signed by the Registrar, Dr. Kikelomo Sallee, said a joint patrol team made up of the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and local community security groups has been mobilised to the area to improve safety.
Further actions were announced on Monday in a separate statement by Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, Acting Director of University Relations. The university has imposed a curfew and other restrictions to deter criminal activity:
Commercial motorbikes are now banned from operating after 10:00 p.m.
All commercial activities and general movement are to stop by 11:00 p.m.
Generator sets must be switched off by midnight.
Night parties are no longer permitted within the community.
Dr. Aliyu said the decisions were reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held earlier in the day. The meeting was attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Alade Jimoh, members of the university management, the chairperson of Moro Local Government Area, traditional leaders, and representatives of security agencies.
The university urged students and residents to comply with the new directives and assured that efforts are ongoing to improve overall security in the area.
