Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced a N2 billion redevelopment plan for Kano’s Farm Centre GSM Market following recent fire damage and to address growing commercial needs. The governor made the commitment during a visit to the market on Friday.
The project will include; reconstruction of fire-damaged sections, expansion of the market using newly acquired space, construction of an on-site fire station equipped with modern firefighting tools, installation of solar-powered streetlights, construction of a pedestrian bridge, development of drainage systems to control flooding, rehabilitation of internal and surrounding access roads.
Governor Yusuf stated the broader vision is to establish the market as an international trading destination accessible to neighbouring countries, aiming to boost cross-border commerce and regional integration. A dedicated management structure will also be established to ensure transparent, efficient, and sustainable operations.
During the visit, the governor urged traders and market users to cooperate with security agencies to combat phone snatching and petty crimes in the area. He separately reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through the state’s 26 vocational training institutes.
Market Chairman Comrade Jamilu Gama thanked the governor for the intervention, expressing traders’ encouragement by the government’s response after the fire losses.
The Farm Centre GSM Market, located in central Kano, operates across 20 plazas and is a major hub for mobile phones and related services. It directly employs over 39,000 youth.
