In the wake of last week’s windstorm in Sumaila Local Government Area that claimed three lives and flattened some 300 homes, the Kano State Government has stepped in with much-needed relief for affected residents.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the distribution of building and household supplies to help families begin the long process of recovery.
Recipients received bags of cement and roofing sheets alongside food staples, maize, assorted groceries and clothing and cash stipends.
Alhaji Faruk Abdu Sumaila, Chairman of Sumaila LGA, reminded beneficiaries that the support is intended to rebuild homes and livelihoods, urging them to use the materials “responsibly and without waste.”
He also announced that three families who lost relatives in the collapse would each receive an extra ₦500,000.
Alhaji Surajo Idris Kanawa, Secretary of the Local Government, acknowledged that while the aid cannot restore what was destroyed, it would “ease immediate hardships and help stabilize families.”
Ibrahim Bala, Head of Community and Social Welfare, affirmed that distribution followed strict merit-based criteria, free from political considerations.
Representing the traditional rulers, Alhaji Isah Magayaki expressed gratitude to the state government and local authorities for a “timely and impartial intervention.”
Among the grateful recipients, Abdurrahaman Yunusa Waziri Sitti pledged to put the assistance to “good and honest use” as his household begins repairs.
