Renowned Ghanaian actor John Dumelo has achieved a significant political milestone, emerging victorious in the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary election. Representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dumelo triumphed over the incumbent, Lydia Alhassan, from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The election, held during Ghana’s general polls on Saturday, December 7, 2024, saw Dumelo declared the winner with an impressive 40,561 votes. His opponent, Lydia Alhassan, who had held the seat since 2019, garnered 27,377 votes.
This victory marks a redemption for Dumelo, who previously contested for the same seat in 2020 but narrowly lost to Alhassan. With this win, he has successfully turned the tide, capturing the support of voters in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
John Dumelo’s journey to political prominence is as remarkable as his acting career. Starting as a child actor in 1991 while still in school, Dumelo quickly rose to fame, becoming a household name in Ghana and Nigeria. Over the years, he has featured in numerous Gollywood and Nollywood productions, earning acclaim for his talent and versatility.
Beyond acting, Dumelo has always been vocal about social and political issues, often using his platform to advocate for change. His transition into politics is seen as a natural extension of his passion for addressing societal challenges.
