Hollywood actor John Boyega recently shared a heartfelt tribute to Nigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji, naming her as a source of inspiration in his career. During a panel at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), the Nigerian-British star expressed his admiration for Nnaji’s remarkable talent and unique approach to acting, which he described as “subtle” and “versatile.”
Boyega on Genevieve Nnaji’s Impact and Skill
Boyega, known for his roles in Star Wars and They Cloned Tyrone, grew up watching Nnaji alongside other Nollywood stars like Omotola Jalade. Reflecting on his childhood, he shared how Nnaji’s performances captivated him and shaped his own understanding of the art of acting.
“Genevieve Nnaji is the Nollywood actress who inspired me. She is my favorite Nollywood actress,” Boyega said, adding that her style of acting has a “subtle beat” and an ability to communicate profound emotion without saying much.
Why Genevieve Nnaji’s Acting Stands Out to Boyega
Boyega further explained his admiration for Nnaji’s style, which he feels transcends typical filmmaking. He emphasized that film is a more intimate medium compared to theater, where actors must open up to live audiences. According to Boyega, Nnaji’s acting is perfectly suited for film because she masters the subtle nuances that make viewers feel deeply connected to her characters.
“Film is supposed to be the eye that shows moments other people didn’t see,” Boyega noted, “and Genevieve always has a way of transcending that kind of skill set.”
Potential Collaboration Between Boyega and Nnaji
Boyega shared that he and Nnaji have discussed collaborating on a project. “I have also spoken to Genevieve and we are starring her,” he added, hinting at the possibility of seeing the two powerhouse actors work together in the near future.
