Nigerian singer Jaywon, who was recently embroiled in a public online spat with fellow artist Ayra Starr, has issued an apology following a perceived slight related to the Grammy nominations. The tension between the two singers sparked when Jaywon shared a photo of himself holding two Grammy awards shortly after the announcement of the 67th Grammy nominations, where Ayra Starr, despite her impressive accomplishments this year, was notably absent.
Many fans interpreted Jaywon’s post as a subtle jab at Starr, implying that his post was a response to her Grammy snub. The backlash was swift, with fans accusing Jaywon of mocking his junior colleague. In response to the criticism, Jaywon has now come forward to address the issue and clarify his intentions.
Jaywon’s Apology and Support for Ayra Starr
In his apology, Jaywon praised Ayra Starr’s talent and voiced his support for her music. He stated, “If you see Ayra Starr, tell her I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for this year’s Grammys. I’m a huge fan of her music, and I believe she’s one of the best female vocalists Africa has.” Emphasizing that he does not seek to pull others down, Jaywon continued, “On this side, we don’t pull people down. We elevate, not just for today, but for the future. Ola Inu Kan.”
Jaywon, who is also a voting member of the Recording Academy (the organization behind the Grammys), shared this message as a way of extending an olive branch, affirming his respect for Starr, and expressing hope for her continued success in the music industry.
