The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declined to acknowledge the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) notice for its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for June 30, citing a breach of its own regulatory framework.
In a letter dated June 13 and addressed to the PDP national chairman, the commission, through its acting Secretary, Hajiya Hau’ru Aminu, referenced file number INEC/DEPM/PDP/286/iii to communicate the decision.
The letter indicated that the party’s submission did not meet the requirements set out in the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.
According to INEC, the notice failed to comply with Part 2(12)(3) of the guidelines, which mandates that any notice of a NEC meeting be jointly signed by both the national chairman and national secretary of the party.
The absence of the national secretary’s signature rendered the notice invalid, the commission stated.
The rejection deepens an ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, which has seen rival factions dispute the legitimacy of each other’s actions.
With the party unable to secure approval for its own internal proceedings, questions remain over its capacity to present a united front ahead of the next general election cycle.
As of now, the PDP has not publicly responded to INEC’s decision or indicated whether it will amend and resubmit the notice in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.
