The Imo State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing a state-wide ban on the sale, use, and distribution of pyrotechnics, popularly referred to as “knockouts” or “bangers,” during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, emphasized that the measure is crucial for ensuring public safety and minimizing risks associated with fireworks, such as injuries, fires, and accidents.
The Command warned that individuals or groups found with or using pyrotechnics during public or private events would face severe legal consequences. “Anyone caught violating this directive will be arrested and prosecuted,” Okoye stated.
To guarantee compliance, the Command has announced plans to intensify patrols and operations across the state. These actions aim to detect and curb illegal activities involving fireworks.
Police Commissioner CP Aboki Danjuma called on residents, event organizers, and business owners to adhere to the directive and report any breaches to the nearest police station. He also expressed gratitude for the continued support of the public.
The Command assured residents of heightened security measures throughout the festive period to safeguard lives and property.
