The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has highlighted the pervasive corruption afflicting Nigeria’s justice system. Aliyu made the statement on Thursday during the 2024 Annual Lecture and Award Ceremony organized by the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN).
Addressing the gathering, Aliyu noted that corruption continues to be one of Nigeria’s most persistent challenges, deeply entrenched across all sectors and institutions. He emphasized that the justice system has not been spared, describing it as a critical area requiring urgent reform.
“The justice sector remains a focal point of concern,” Aliyu said, pointing to a range of issues including bribery, influence peddling, and systemic inefficiencies. He lamented that despite judicial officials having limited public contact compared to other sectors, they still exhibit relatively high levels of bribery.
Aliyu explained that corruption within the judiciary undermines policy decision-making and erodes trust in governance. He highlighted several challenges facing the justice system, including institutional weaknesses, inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, a lack of skilled personnel, and socio-cultural factors.
He urged for targeted anti-corruption measures to address these entrenched problems, warning that without decisive action, the justice system’s integrity would remain compromised.
