The House of Representatives has established an ad-hoc committee to investigate the Federal Government’s implementation of its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) policy nationwide.
The 11-member committee, formally inaugurated by Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas on Thursday, held its inaugural meeting in Abuja on Friday.
Committee Chairman Hon. Ahmadu Jaha (APC-Borno) stated the panel will assess the CNG programme’s effectiveness, safety, and long-term sustainability.
Jaha emphasized the critical need for equitable distribution of CNG conversion centres across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
“The committee is committed to doing everything within its powers to ensure a balanced and just spread of CNG centres across the country.”
The chairman outlined the panel’s approach as; Collaborating with relevant ministries, regulatory agencies, oil and gas companies, and stakeholders to align the policy with international standards, Critically examining existing legal and regulatory frameworks, Proposing legislative interventions to the House based on findings.
Jaha directed committee members to strictly follow the terms of reference documented in the House votes and proceedings to maintain focus.
This investigation follows the House’s May 2025 adoption of the motion “Call to Establish More Compressed Natural Gas Conversion Centres across Nigeria,” which demanded inclusive access to CNG infrastructure for all citizens.
The committee’s work plan and timeline were not specified during the inauguration.
