The Gombe State Police Command has announced new restrictions on motorcycle movements across the metropolis in response to growing public outrage over a recent fatal attack by suspected phone-snatchers.
The move follows the killing of 45-year-old businessman Ahmed Aliyu Umar, better known as “Amadi Kasiran”, whose death has reignited concerns about the safety of residents travelling by motorcycle at night.
According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi, the attack occurred at around 8:00 pm on June 8, 2025, in the Hammadu Kafi area of Akko Local Government. Mr Umar was ambushed by a group believed to be operating as “Kalare” thugs while returning home.
The assailants attempted to snatch his mobile phones and other valuables. He sustained fatal stab wounds to the left side of his chest and back and was taken to Specialist Hospital Gombe, where a doctor pronounced him dead.
The police have condemned the murder as senseless and are intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
“All available resources are being deployed to trace these criminals and bring them to justice,” DSP Abdullahi said, adding that the Command will continue to work closely with local communities to enhance security.
Over the past month, more than twenty people have either been killed or critically injured in similar attacks within Gombe metropolis. On June 7, just after the Eid al-Sallah celebrations, six individuals were hurt and had their phones stolen in a single incident. A few days earlier, a 70-year-old man was killed and his motorcycle taken.
Witnesses report that the suspects travel in large groups, armed with knives and other weapons, overwhelming lone riders or pedestrians before robbing them.
