Bashir Ahmad, who previously served as a digital media aide to former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has publicly labeled the Obidient movement as “the most toxic political group we have ever had in this part of the world.”
Ahmad made the statement in a comment posted on his personal X account (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
He asserted that the youth-led group, supporting Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, engages primarily in insulting, dragging, and ridiculing politicians “from morning till night without restraint,” believing “no one is ever good enough.”
Ahmad further claimed the group abandons reasoned debate when Peter Obi’s name arises in serious discussions. “They suddenly lose the ability to engage intelligently and instantly abandon logic and reason only to resort to personal attacks,” he stated. According to Ahmad, the movement offers “no facts, explanations or thoughtful dialogue,” only “a barrage of insults.”
He argued this behavior defines an unhealthy political movement. “With their attitude and this kind of behavior, there is no way Peter can win over people from the other side or even the undecided voters,” Ahmad said. He contended that no political movement can succeed in a diverse country like Nigeria “through aggression, emotional blackmail and echo chambers.”
Ahmad emphasized his belief that elections are won “by persuading, not intimidate and to engage, not abuse.”
He concluded by suggesting the situation benefits the ruling party: “it is a good thing that they will continue living in denial,” adding that he believes Peter Obi himself “has refused to see the damage this toxic movement has been doing to his cause.”
