A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted bail to former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele in a money laundering case, setting stringent conditions for his release.
Justice Yusuf Halilu ordered that Emefiele produce two sureties who own properties in Asokoro, Maitama, and Wuse valued at a minimum of ₦2 billion.
The judge also directed that Emefiele deposit his international passport with the court’s registrar and warned that failure to meet these conditions by Wednesday would result in his remand in custody.
In hearing the bail application presented by Emefiele’s lead counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), Justice Halilu noted that the former governor had already been granted bail in three other pending criminal cases and that there was no record of him jumping bail.
Prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) did not object to bail but asked the court to attach special terms distinct from those imposed in the other proceedings.
The eight-count charge against Emefiele accuses him of stealing and seizing billions of naira from proxy accounts and illegally acquiring a 753-unit housing estate.
