Federal Government Issues Alert on New XEC COVID-19 Variant Spreading Across 29 Countries

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has raised an alarm over the emergence of the XEC COVID-19 variant, a strain that has rapidly spread to 29 countries. In response, the government has directed heightened vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate its potential impact on public health.

First identified in Australia, the XEC variant has demonstrated a significant growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its transmissibility and impact. A letter dated December 5 from Dr. O.N. Anuma, Permanent Secretary and Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors, outlined the urgency of the situation.

The letter stated, “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally. This variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”

Dr. Anuma emphasized the importance of immediate action, urging healthcare institutions to activate alert systems and maintain a high level of suspicion for patients with COVID-like symptoms. Hospitals and healthcare providers were advised to prioritize early detection and response.

Strengthened Collaboration and Data Sharing
In the directive, Dr. Anuma highlighted the need for collaborative efforts between health institutions and the Federal Ministry of Health. Enhanced monitoring protocols and the timely sharing of critical data were underscored as vital to developing effective response strategies.

“We request your committee to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to share critical data regarding this strain and implement enhanced monitoring protocols. Timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders will be essential for effective response strategies,” Dr. Anuma noted.

The XEC variant has already been identified in major nations, including the United States, France, Germany, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. Earlier reports indicated that the variant had infected over 600 individuals in 27 countries by September. Its mutations are believed to increase transmissibility, although vaccines are still expected to provide protection against severe illness.
