The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has once again pledged to relocate the longstanding Apo Mechanic Village community to a newly prepared site in Wasa District, following more than two decades of unfulfilled promises.
Speaking on Friday at the Apo Mechanic Village shortly after a commissioning engagement, Wike assured members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association that the move is intended to bring order and safety to their operations, not to displace them.
“We are not pushing anyone out,” he said. “What we are doing is ensuring that business activities are conducted in a planned, organized environment that supports growth and safety, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu promised.”
According to the FCT press release, the Wasa site will feature modern infrastructure, including internal road networks, reliable water and power supplies, and designated zones tailored to different trades.
Wike directed relevant FCTA departments and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to fast-track these developments and to engage traders’ representatives throughout the transition.
Leaders of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association expressed their gratitude for the minister’s hands-on approach and reaffirmed their cooperation with the FCT Administration. Their relocation forms part of a wider strategy to decongest informal settlements, improve environmental conditions, and guide the orderly growth of Abuja.
Also in attendance were Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council; former FCT Senator Philip Aduda; FCDA Executive Secretary Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda; and heads of key land-related departments within the FCTA.
