Citizen Commons International has today unveiled the Nigerian Youth Voice Survey 2025, a nationwide effort to collect the views of 25,000 young Nigerians on the country’s future and the role of youth in shaping policy.
At a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Executive Director Olalekan Oshunkoya described the survey as a strategic initiative to ensure that the perspectives of 18- to 35-year-olds inform public policy and national development planning.
The survey will gather data on a range of pressing issues, including police brutality, corruption, access to justice, healthcare, housing, and Nigeria’s reputation abroad.
“With up to 25,000 responses, we will present actionable insights to leaders at the local, state, and federal levels,” Oshunkoya said. The resulting report is intended to offer clear, data-backed policy recommendations.
Building on Citizen Commons’ earlier “Youth Conversation for a New Nigeria” project, which produced the policy document A Nigeria for the Many, Not the Few during the 2023 election cycle, the new survey aims to be the first comprehensive account of youth perspectives on insecurity, political participation, unemployment, education and governance. According to Oshunkoya, the project is more than a data-collection exercise, it is a tool to amplify youth voices and encourage their active role in governance.
Mobilization efforts for the survey will span both urban and rural communities. Citizen Commons plans to reach young people in schools, on university campuses, within community groups and informal settings, with the goal of achieving broad inclusion and diversity across all six geopolitical zones.
Oshunkoya emphasized that the survey’s findings will be shared with policymakers to help shape more responsive and inclusive policies.
“This project seeks to give young Nigerians a platform to say what matters to them and how they want to be governed,” he said.
