Bishop Bulus Yohanna, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State and Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, has spoken out against the custom of treating widows as assets to be divided among their late husbands’ relatives.
He issued the call during the 2025 International Widows’ Day celebration organized by the Women’s Wing of CAN in Minna.
In a statement read on his behalf by Reverend Joshua Marcus, Yohanna stressed that widows “are human beings who deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, not as assets to be inherited.”
He appealed to grieving families to abandon actions that inflict further trauma on widows, urging them instead to offer support and upliftment.
Yohanna also encouraged widows to pursue self-reliance and to concentrate on raising their children with purpose.
“This day reminds us that empowerment must begin at home,” he said through his deputy.
Earlier in the program, Ladi Nuhu, State Chairperson of the CAN Women’s Wing, addressed attendees under the theme “Empowering Widows: Building Resilience, Restoring Dignity.”
Nuhu called on widows to remain resilient and to anchor their hope in God while intentionally working toward better lives for themselves and their families.
