A political group, the Movement for the Actualization of Kwande Gubernatorial Ambition (MAKGA), has launched a campaign to stop Governor Hyacinth Alia from securing a second term in office.
At a press briefing in Makurdi, MAKGA leaders stated that they want the 2027 governorship slot to be given to the Kwande and Ushongo Local Government Areas to complete the tenure of Aper Aku, Benue’s first civilian governor, whose term was cut short by a military coup in 1983.
The group’s convener, Leonard Ikyem, emphasized their commitment to this cause, saying:
“We, the offspring of the dynamic, patriotic, and progressive people of the Kwande Intermediate Area… wish to inform the good people of Benue of our desire to renew the governorship ambition of the Kwande people in 2027.”
Governor Hyacinth Alia, a Catholic priest-turned-politician, has been serving as the governor of Benue State since May 29, 2023.
However, MAKGA insists that power should shift to the Kwande region to honor past political agreements and ensure regional balance.
As the 2027 elections approach, this movement could shape the political future of Benue State, as regional interests and historical considerations come into play.
