Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has established a 41-member committee tasked with reviewing proposals for creating new emirates, chiefdoms, and districts within the state.
According to a statement released by Mukhtar Gidado, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the committee’s primary role is to assess all memoranda submitted to the State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. This review will follow defined criteria to determine which communities deserve elevation to new Emirates, Chiefdoms, or Districts.
The statement recalled the state government’s earlier invitation to interested communities to submit their requests for such new traditional institutions.
Gidado stated that the committee must base its recommendations on principles of equity and fairness. It is also mandated to ensure socio-political inclusiveness and the financial sustainability of any new emirates, chiefdoms, or districts established.
Hamza Akuyam, the immediate past Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State, will chair the committee. Its members represent all twenty local government areas of Bauchi State. The committee also includes representatives from security agencies, civil servants, retirees, and Civil Society Organisations.
Governor Bala Mohammed will formally inaugurate the committee on Thursday, July 3rd, at the Executive Council Chamber within the Government House in Bauchi.
