Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) in Lapai, Niger State.
The directive was announced on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, in an official statement.
Usman stated the closure decision stems from “recent security breaches and unfortunate loss of lives within the university community.” He conveyed the Governor’s “great concern” regarding the situation.
“The safety and security of all citizens, especially students, remain a top priority for the government,” Usman said. “We are deeply saddened by the recent incidents and the government is taking proactive measures to address the situation swiftly.”
The statement urged the university community to “remain vigilant, calm, and cooperate with the authorities during this period of closure.” It added that the government is “working diligently to restore order, ensure the safety of all citizens and maintain peace within the university community and the state.”
Usman also assured that effort is being made to investigate the security breaches and bring perpetrators to justice. No specific details about the nature of the breaches or the number of lives lost were provided in the statement.
