The Pan-Northern socio-political organization, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has honored the legacy of Dr. Paul Unongo, describing him as a “colossus” whose passing marks a profound loss for Benue State, the North, and Nigeria as a whole. Dr. Unongo, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s Second Republic and former Minister of Power and Steel, passed away at the age of 87.
Hailing from Jato Aka in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Dr. Unongo also served as Deputy Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, cementing his role as a leader deeply committed to the development of the North and the nation.
In a statement released by the ACF’s Secretary-General, Malam Murtala Aliyu, the organization lauded Unongo’s unwavering dedication to his people and humanity, calling him “a patriotic Nigerian” who devoted his life to the service of others.
“The Arewa Consultative Forum wishes to commiserate on the demise of its member and the Deputy Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, Elder Statesman Wantaregh Paul Unongo, OFR, with the family, the entire people of Benue State, the North, and the country at large,” the statement read in part.
Dr. Unongo’s contributions to national development and his influential role in the socio-political landscape of the North leave an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history. His death is being mourned across various quarters, as tributes pour in for a leader celebrated for his vision, patriotism, and service.
