At least 20 people in Okija, Anambra State, lost their lives in a stampede during a rice giveaway on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses shared disturbing video of lifeless bodies sprawled on the ground following the stampede.
Charles Aburime, who is the Chief Press Secretary to the Anambra State governor, confirmed the incident.
He assured the public that the state government is aware of the tragedy and is working to address the situation. He also promised that an official statement would be released soon.
This heartbreaking event comes not long after a similar tragedy in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, where over 35 people, including children, died in a stampede at a carnival.
