Analyst Urges Tinubu to Build Bridge Linking Agenebode and Idah

Senior consultant and public affairs analyst Abdulsalam Suleiman Izuagbe has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the construction of a bridge connecting Agenebode in Edo State to Idah in Kogi State. The appeal comes amid growing concerns over the deteriorating state of the Muritala Mohammed Bridge in Lokoja, a critical link for transport between the North and South.

Izuagbe emphasized that the new bridge would alleviate pressure on the Muritala Mohammed Bridge, which has been overburdened for decades with heavy cargo, including cement and iron rods, typically transported by rail in more developed systems. He noted the dire need for this infrastructure project to bolster commerce and economic activities while advancing Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

“That bridge is becoming fragile and weak due to years of overloading. If you get there in Lokoja, you will pity its condition. It’s urgently begging for a supporting bridge.”

The analyst pointed out that the lack of a railway system has forced an excessive load onto the bridge, accelerating its wear and posing safety risks. He added that constructing a bridge between Agenebode and Idah would not only reduce the strain but also open up new opportunities for residents in both states.

Izuagbe painted a grim picture of the current situation for communities around Agenebode and Idah, separated by just a kilometer of water but reliant on unsafe canoes for transport. He lamented the lack of a proper crossing, saying:

“People are dying on canoes, and the type of canoes we have don’t have life jackets and are as old as my grandfather.”

He urged Tinubu to address this long-standing gap, citing the availability of funds from the N5.4 trillion saved through the removal of oil subsidies.

According to Izuagbe, allocating even a fraction of the subsidy savings could bring the project to fruition.

“One trillion can be plugged into that bridge, and it will be completed if given to a good organization,” he said, adding that the bridge would be a strategic investment in infrastructure that aligns with Tinubu’s vision for economic revival.
