African Ministers Meet in Zambia to Address Informal Employment

From February 11 to 13, 2025, Zambia is hosting the 51st African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC) Governing Council Meeting at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

Ministers responsible for Labour and Employment from 18 African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, are attending the event.

The meeting focuses on innovative ways to reduce informal employment and promote decent work across Africa.

Zambia’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba, emphasized that this gathering offers a unique chance for Zambia to lead in improving labour practices on the continent.

She highlighted the importance of regional collaboration to address cross-border labour issues and harmonize policies.

Established in June 1980, ARLAC is an intergovernmental institution that provides training and technical assistance to member states, employers, workers, and other labour stakeholders.

The organization’s goal is to strengthen labour administration systems across Africa.

The outcomes of this meeting are expected to shape the future of labour administration in Africa, promoting transitions from informal to formal employment and ensuring decent work for all.
