On the Download podcast, Kanye West, now known as Ye shared that he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and has since been correctly diagnosed with autism.
He revealed that his wife, Bianca Censori, encouraged him to seek a re-evaluation after noticing inconsistencies with the initial diagnosis.
Ye explained that understanding his autism has provided clarity on his past behaviors, such as his resistance to external influences on his music.
He said, Autism takes you to a ‘Rain Man’ thing. When people tell you to not do it, you just get on that one point. And that is my problem. When fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way.
Since discovering his true diagnosis, Ye has chosen not to take medication, fearing it might hinder his creativity.
He emphasized the importance of creativity free from the constraints of incorrect diagnoses and medication.
This revelation comes after years of public discussions about Ye’s mental health. In 2019, he opened up about his struggles with mental health, including bipolar disorder and sometimes psychosis.
In 2020, his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, defended him, attributing erratic social media posts to his diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Ye’s openness about his autism diagnosis sheds light on the complexities of mental health and the importance of accurate diagnosis and support.
