A 32-year-old resident identified as Goni Umbadu was fatally stabbed and five thatched homes destroyed in a violent dispute over stolen grass in Saleri village on Saturday.
According to multiple sources, Umbadu confronted a fellow villager, 28-year-old Haruna Mai Pampy, after suspecting him of stealing dried grass intended for livestock feed.
The confrontation escalated when Mai Pampy drew a knife and stabbed Umbadu several times in the stomach, chest and back.
Umbadu was transported to the Specialist Hospital in Geidam, where the attending physician pronounced him dead on arrival.
In the hours that followed, angry youths from the community carried out a reprisal attack, setting fire to five thatched houses belonging to Fulani residents. Flames consumed the structures, forcing numerous families to flee their homes into nearby bushland for safety.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, stated that Mai Pampy and several youths believed responsible for the arson have been arrested and are in police custody pending further investigation.
SP Abdulkarim added that security forces have been deployed to restore order and prevent further escalation.
No injuries were reported among security personnel, and no fatalities other than Umbadu’s have been confirmed. The command has appealed to community leaders to assist in calming tensions and encouraging witnesses to come forward.
