Zambia’s musician Wesley Chibambo, popularly known as Dandy Krazy, tragically died after a road accident on New Year’s Eve. The 47-year-old artist was involved in a collision with a truck and another car in Kapiri Mposhi, which left three people dead on the spot.
Dandy Krazy was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka for emergency care but succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning.
Tributes poured in following the news, with President Hakainde Hichilema describing Dandy Krazy as an “extraordinary talent” whose music united Zambians across generations.
His daughter, Comfort, shared a moving tribute, noting that her father passed away on the birthday of his third child, Shanice. “Even in death, we will always love you, Papa,” she wrote.
Dandy Krazy was not only an entertainer but a voice for political and social change. His hit song “Donchi Kubeba” became an anthem for the Patriotic Front’s 2011 election victory, ending 20 years of rule by the Movement for Multiparty Democracy.
For his contribution, the late President Michael Sata honored him with the Grand Commander of the Order of Freedom.
Throughout his career, Dandy Krazy released hits like “Chintelelwe” and worked on collaborations such as “Chipuba Chandi” with Indi K and “Temperature” with Uniq.
Prominent figures like lawyer and politician Sakwiba Sikota likened Dandy Krazy’s influence to global icons such as Bob Marley and Nina Simone. Sikota praised his innovative spirit and role as a unifying figure in Zambia’s music and cultural landscape.
The Zambian government has pledged to cover funeral expenses for the artist and other victims of the crash.
