The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intercepted counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at over N180 million in Lagos. The operation, carried out at a makeshift factory in the Oke Arin Market on Lagos Island, followed a public complaint regarding the illegal production of alcohol.
NAFDAC disclosed the details in a statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday. The raid led to the arrest of three individuals and the confiscation of fake versions of popular alcohol brands.
Among the apprehended suspects was Mr. Tochukwu Henry, identified as the primary orchestrator of the illegal operation. He admitted to refilling Rémy Martin bottles with St Rémy contents and employing two others to assist him.
The agency reported seizing large quantities of counterfeit beverages, empty bottles, and packaging materials during the operation. These items were part of an elaborate scheme designed to deceive consumers by replicating popular alcohol brands.
The arrested individuals are currently in custody as investigations continue. NAFDAC stated that the operation underscores its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the authenticity of consumable goods in Nigeria.
In its statement, NAFDAC urged consumers to exercise caution, especially during the festive season when counterfeit products often flood the market. The agency encouraged citizens to report suspicious products and activities to the nearest NAFDAC office to help curb the circulation of fake goods.
