Esosa Iyawe, the House of Representatives member for Oredo Constituency in Edo State, has announced his defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Iyawe’s departure, along with three other LP lawmakers, marks a significant shift and raises questions about the Labour Party’s internal stability.
Iyawe outlined the reasons for his decision in a statement released on Thursday, attributing his departure to the ongoing leadership crisis and legal battles plaguing the LP. According to Iyawe, the party’s inability to resolve disputes surrounding its legitimate leadership has left him and his supporters in political uncertainty.
“I am writing to formally tender my resignation as a member of the Labour Party (LP), effective immediately,” Iyawe stated.
“My decision to resign from LP is as a result of the party’s inability to identify the legitimate Caretaker Committee from the national to state levels. More so, due to the incessant tussle rocking the leadership of the party and the numerous perpetual cases against the leadership of the party, myself and my supporters are in a state of confusion as to the party’s stability in leadership.”
Iyawe also cited alignment with his political interests as a factor in his defection to the APC. With the ruling party offering a more stable platform, Iyawe suggested that the move would allow him to better serve his constituency.
