The Benue State Government has declared its unequivocal support for the proposed tax reform bills currently under review in the National Assembly. Despite significant resistance from several northern states and lawmakers, the state’s leadership views the reforms as a pivotal step toward enhancing Nigeria’s revenue base.
Speaking to journalists in Makurdi on Monday, Michael Oglegba, the Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, emphasized Benue State’s alignment with the Federal Government’s fiscal policy objectives.
“The tax reform bill is largely a good bill. We support the effort of the Federal Government to grow tax revenues,” Oglegba stated. He highlighted the need for innovative measures to address Nigeria’s revenue challenges, which he described as crucial for sustainable development.
While Benue State has thrown its weight behind the reforms, the proposed tax measures have sparked intense debate across the country. Several states in the North have voiced strong opposition, citing concerns over the potential economic strain on businesses and citizens. Senators representing these states have also resisted the bills, arguing that the reforms could disproportionately affect certain regions.
Proponents of the tax reform bills argue that they are essential for increasing the government’s capacity to fund critical infrastructure and social services. Opponents, however, caution that the measures may exacerbate existing economic disparities.
